When a Football Match Became Something More
It was supposed to be just another football match.
A group of children, full of energy, doing what they love — playing, competing, learning. The kind of environment that should build confidence, friendships and memories.
But for one 11-year-old boy, it became something very different.
He came home in tears.
Not because his team lost.
Not because of the result.
But because of something that was said.
A single word.
“Immigrant.”
In that moment, the game stopped being about sport. It became about identity. About belonging. About feeling different.
And for a child, that can stay long after the final whistle.
A Moment That Sparked Something Bigger
For many parents, moments like this are deeply personal. They hurt, they stay, and often they pass without change.
But this time, something shifted.
Instead of letting the moment fade, it became a starting point.
A question emerged:
How many other children experience this — and say nothing?
From that question, an idea began to grow.
Not a campaign.
Not a project.
A movement.
I AM | WE ARE 1
The message is simple.
Every child deserves to feel safe.
Every child deserves respect.
Every child deserves to belong.
I AM | WE ARE 1 was created to bring people together — parents, coaches, teachers, schools and communities — around those values.
It is not about pointing fingers.
It is about setting standards.
It is about reminding us that the environments we create for children matter.
Beyond Words
The movement provides practical ways for people to get involved.
Posters in schools.
Messages in sports clubs.
Conversations in classrooms.
Small actions, repeated consistently, can change culture.
Because respect is not automatic.
It is taught.
It is modelled.
It is reinforced.
A Shared Responsibility
Children learn from what they see.
From the sidelines.
From the classroom.
From the people around them.
That means responsibility does not sit with children alone.
It sits with adults.
With parents.
With coaches.
With teachers.
With all of us.
A Movement Growing
What started as one moment is now becoming something bigger.
More people are joining.
More conversations are happening.
More awareness is being created.
And that is how change begins.
Not through one action, but through many.
Looking Forward
The goal is simple, but powerful.
To create environments where no child feels excluded.
Where difference is accepted.
Where kindness is normal.
Because every child deserves that.
Every Child Belongs
We are different.
We are unique.
We are one.
